Variability of formaldehyde in the Antarctic troposphere

چکیده
The annual cycle of formaldehyde (HCHO) was measured at a remote site in Antarctica in order to investigate seasonal and diurnal variations as well as chemical processes in the troposphere. The measurements were performed in 1997 (March 1997 to January 1998) and in February 1999 at the German Antarctic research station Neumayer, which is located at 70¡37@S, 8¡22@W. The obtained time series for formaldehyde in near-surface air clearly indicates the occurrence of diurnal and seasonal variations in Antarctica. It was found that HCHO concentrations vary from values below the detection limit (0.03 ppbv) to maximum values of 0.4 ppbv in winter and 0.7 ppbv in the austral summer. The observed concentrations show daily variations on certain days, with maxima in early afternoon and minima during the night. It was found that HCHO mixing ratios are signiÐcantly higher than those predicted so far by photochemical models.

Transport out of the Antarctic polar vortex from a three-dimensional transport model
[1] A three-dimensional chemical transport model is utilized to study the transport out of the Antarctic polar vortex during the southern hemisphere spring. On average, over five consecutive years between 1993 and 1997, horizontal transport out of the vortex into the midlatitude stratosphere is smaller than vertical transport into the troposphere. However, there is significant interannual varia...
متن کاملA new airborne laser-induced fluorescence instrument for in situ detection of formaldehyde throughout the troposphere and lower stratosphere
The NASA In Situ Airborne Formaldehyde (ISAF) instrument is a high-performance laser-based detector for gas-phase formaldehyde (HCHO). ISAF uses rotational-state specific laser excitation at 353 nm for laserinduced fluorescence (LIF) detection of HCHO. A number of features make ISAF ideal for airborne deployment, including (1) a compact, low-maintenance fiber laser, (2) a single-pass design for...

متن کاملSignificant warming of the Antarctic winter troposphere.
We report an undocumented major warming of the Antarctic winter troposphere that is larger than any previously identified regional tropospheric warming on Earth. This result has come to light through an analysis of recently digitized and rigorously quality controlled Antarctic radiosonde observations. The data show that regional midtropospheric temperatures have increased at a statistically sig...
متن کاملSouthern Hemisphere Atmospheric Circulation Response to Global Warming
The response of the Southern Hemisphere (SH), extratropical, atmospheric general circulation to transient, anthropogenic, greenhouse warming is investigated in a coupled climate model. The extratropical circulation response consists of a SH summer half-year poleward shift of the westerly jet and a year-round positive wind anomaly in the stratosphere and the tropical upper troposphere. Along wit...
